Two well known painters were Juan de la Cruz Tapia (1840-1933) and Saturnino Porcel (1830-1892). They represent and summerize the bolivian painting in the transition of century, since their works reflect the strength of the style over individuality and at the same time goes through all of these styles (historical reconstrucion, religious inspiration, portraits).
A Gap between the Colonial period and the Vanguard
Although some important names are present like Balcera, del Carpio, Ugalde, Villavicencio, Tapia, Porcel and Iturralde have an important contribution to the XIXth century Bolivian painting, this small group of people is not enough to hide the fact that this century was for Bolivian painting one of following the established trends, no originality, these painters worked basically on demand. Most of their works can be found in the local mayor halls or government houses more than in any museum.
